Web-Based Laboratory Monitor

Electromechanica, Inc. designed this web based water quality monitoring system for the Levin Lab at the Forsyth Institute, a research facility affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. This system continuously monitors the water quality parameters in their Xenopus laevis frog facility. The frogs are very sensitive to the water quality so it is crucial to carefully monitor trends in the water chemistry and to notify the proper personnel should parameters exceed preset limits

This system continuously monitors the sensor inputs and displays them on a custom webpage via a built in web server. This allows researchers and technicians to monitor the facility remotely from any internet connected computer. The system is also set up to send alarm emails should a problem arise. This allows an entire distribution list to receive notice of possible problems and helps ensure redundancy. In this particular system we also send email alerts to one of the researcher's cell phone.

The system was designed to monitor the following parameters:

  • Temperature
  • Conductivity
  • ORP
  • Dissolved oxygen
  • pH
  • Filter back-pressure
  • High and low water levels

At the clients request we also included web controlled outputs to allow them to remotely turn lights on and off in the room so a separate webcam can be used to visually inspect the premises. The system is housed in a NEMA 12 enclosure that is environmentally sealed to protect the electronics from the wet environment.

Electromechanica, Inc. can design custom solutions comprised of any array of sensors and actuators for web based data acquisition and control. This design capability opens a wide door for scientific, environmental and manufacturing organizations to use the web as a powerful resource. Sensor arrays can be deployed over wide areas and controlled from any web connected computer on earth!

Key Benefits

  • Web based control for flexibility
  • Utilizes pre-existing network infrastructure
  • Fully customizable arrays of inputs and outputs
  • Very user friendly
